On January 20, seven students from the Karpenko-Kary National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television were unreasonably detained by Ukrainian police (dressed in civilian clothes and without any proper identification) and then driven to an unknown destination. They were out of reach for over six hours, later their relatives found them in a Kyiv police department.

The detainees were badly beaten and were refused medical assistance for more than 12 hours. Several of them suffered cranial trauma and concussions. After being captured, they were undressed and their coats were taken for investigation in search of evidence of their involvement in the clashes with Berkut special police forces.

They are accused of active participation in a mass disturbance with grave consequences, which is punishable by a prison sentence of 8 to 15 years (according to Article 294, no. 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code).

As of January 23, Oleksandr Shkrabak (2nd-year, Directing) and Andriy Ivaniuk (graduate, Directing) are being held in the Lukyanivka Prison. They have been sentenced to one month of pre-trial detention.

Andriy Kotliar (3rd-year, Camera operation), Vadym Kovalyov (3rd-year, Acting) and Danylo Okulyov (2nd-year, Sound directing) are under house arrest.

Yuriy Khrobust (4th-year, Broadcasting) is also sentenced to 2 months of house arrest.

Ostap Vakuliuk (3rd-year, Acting) was released.

Activists that attended the court hearings say that the investigation produced no evidence.

Over the last week, demonstrations of solidarity with the students were organized by fellow students of Karpenko-Kary University, by the Art Workers' Self-defense Initiative and by the students of the National Academy of Art and Architecture.

Andriy Ivaniuk, one of the detained, announced a hunger strike; he insists that political repressions are happening in Ukraine. Today in this country anyone can become a victim of police violence and government tyranny.

The Ukrainian art community is calling international cultural institutions and artists to solidarity with Ukraine and to press their own governments to influence the situation.
